So far, I’ve covered the history of global warming, consequences of global warming and I’ve presented statistics on the effects that global warming is having natural disasters.

I dont feel like the paper is complete yet though.
Are there any points that you think would be beneficial?

I would really appreciate any and all help.

This metering tool has many uses, the main purpose is to indicate kilowatt useage  of any 110 volt plug in devise.  You can read more about its uses at  www.alternativeenergysource.org/first_step/kill-a-watt.html . 

I am currently working on createing a report on kilowatt hour usage of some of the more common electrical devices.

The highlight of the show for me was meeting and speaking with Ed Begley Jr. of Living with Ed TV show.  We talked briefly about this website, Citizenre Solar panels and his new book Living Like Ed.  This was one trade show that I could comfortably spend a few days at and still not be board.  I also spoke with many of the exhibitors gathering product information and ideas that we will pass on to you though our website www.alternativeenergysource.org .

]]> http://alternativeenergysource.org/blog/?feed=rss2&p=14 Energy audit was disappointing http://alternativeenergysource.org/blog/?p=13 http://alternativeenergysource.org/blog/?p=13#comments Wed, 26 Mar 2008 18:50:14 +0000 john http://alternativeenergysource.org/blog/?p=13 We had an energy audit last week on our home.   Our local PUD offers  a basic walk through audit checking lights, insulation, windows, appliances, etc…  The good news was, from the moment the auditor saw our monthly energy usage he was impressed  with how low it was (avg. 14-20 kwh a day, 2400 sq.ft. ).  We use most of the energy saving tips that we suggest on our website, so our home was probably not what the auditor was used to.  The bad news, he could not offer us any more energy saving ideas; We were disappointed.  I know we can save more and still not have it effect our daily living.

Some arguments for alternative energy include:

 

  • Less greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, there fore less global warming. Even if you are one who believes there is no global warming, you can say it reduces acid rain, and smog.

 

  • Greater diversity in energy sources reduces the risk of a few sources monopolizing supply and disrupting prices.

 

  • Self reliance, individuals and governments would benefit from generating more or all of their energy needs from alternative sources.

 

  •  Patriotism, alternative energies tend to come from local sources; reducing the need for imported energy. Incase of war we would not be dependent on foreign governments to supply our energy needs.  It would be more difficult for someone or some warring country to knock out our power grid.

 

  • Peace, there have been many wars fought over securing energy sources; as well, some foreign countries have used traditional energy sources as their basis of money and power to disrupt their citizens and world peace. 

 

  • Monetary, conservation of energy used i.e. “neg-a-watt” saves municipalities, corporations and individual family’s cash, freeing up funds for other expenditures.  Locked in rates, many alternative energy source for example solar, wind, and geothermal have a high initial cost but relatively low production and maintenance costs and can save on future energy cost increases.  Save on your taxes, almost everyone does not mind paying less on taxes with tax incentives.  

 

There are so many benefits to using alternative energy, although not all potential sources are the best choice at any given time.

]]> http://alternativeenergysource.org/blog/?feed=rss2&p=12 Liquid Fuels: Time May Be Running Out http://alternativeenergysource.org/blog/?p=11 http://alternativeenergysource.org/blog/?p=11#comments Fri, 14 Mar 2008 20:19:31 +0000 john http://alternativeenergysource.org/blog/?p=11 It is the beginning of the end for liquid fuels.  It has taken millions of years to produce and will take us a 150-200 years to it burn up.  I believe the recent attention given to biofuel production will only increase this timeline by 5%-10% at best with the current rate of use.  Biofuels are limited by the amount of land it takes for production as well as the impact it has on food crops .  Land is finite, we can only grow so much (guns or butter). 

Don’t get me wrong, I believe there is a place for biofuels; I just do not think it is the total answer but a bridge to what is next.  We need to convert from burning liquid fuels, i.e. fossil fuels in our cars, trucks and power plants to a sustainable energy source. 

Electricity is the future, generated from sustainable sources, solar, wind, tidal …  Nearly everything we need energy for can be done with electricity.  Imagine everyone producing most or all of their power needs. Plugging in their electric cars and trucks where ever they go;  no smoke coming from stacks of industry.  Big government, established oil and auto corporations will try everything to keep the power that the current system gives them.

Be part of the solution, only by popular demand and our monetary votes, will this change come: A winning solution for all of us.
